Harper is the biggest name of the bunch, and has experience and home-field advantage on his side, so he’ll be a popular pick. However, Aguilar has hit the most home runs of that group thus far. The field for the 2018 T-Mobile Home Run Derby has been set. Baez, Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman, Brewers first baseman Jesus Aguilar, and Astros third baseman Alex Bregman were eliminated in the first round of the 2018 Home Run Derby. Harper beat Dodgers breakout star Max Muncy in the second round to get to the finals. Schwarber knocked off Phillies slugger Rhys Hoskins to advance.
He broke that record in the following round, hitting 40 home runs in 2 tiebreakers. The previous overall record was set in 2016 by Giancarlo Stanton, who finished with a total of 61 home runs, defeating Todd Frazier in the final round. The current overall record is held by Guerrero Jr. at a mark of 91, set in 2019. Only three participants, Yoenis Céspedes, Stanton, and Pete Alonso, have won the Home Run Derby without being selected to the All-Star Game. Alonso broke Guerrero's first-round record in 2021 with 35 homers on his way to his second straight Derby Title . Someone so innocent and fresh that he thinks the Derby might actually be fun.

He followed up that unique 2016 season by hitting 30 homers last year, and he's on pace to set a new career high. Still just 25 years old, this likely won't be Schwarber's final Derby appearance. The fact that he was invited to participate despite not making the All-Star roster is a good sign of that. If you're trying to handicap the field and predict a winner of Monday's event, you have to consider the three players from the NL East. Over the past two seasons, Pederson is 10th in the majors in slugging percentage against right-handed pitchers (.564 entering Wednesday's game).

In 2015 the team was named Ballpark Digest's Team of the Year and received the John H. Johnson President's Award, the highest award in minor league baseball. The team is owned and operated by Swing-Batter-Swing, LLC whose principal shareholder is Andrew T. Berlin of Chicago, Ill. There probably weren't too many people back in spring training who would have expected Muncy to be participating in this year's Home Run Derby. To that point in his career, the 27-year-old had hit a grand total of five home runs in his 96 big league games, all played with the Oakland A's.

184 home runs were hit throughout the night, falling one home run short of the record 185 set in 2016. Since his first big power-hitting season in 2017, Ramírez has pulled 144 of his 163 home runs -- that's over 88%. • Soto says his goal for this Home Run Derby is to hit the longest opposite-field home run. He'd be the one to do it -- since his debut season in 2018, Soto's 41 opposite-field homers are the most of any left-handed hitter, and tied for second-most overall with J.D. • Rodríguez is looking to join some rare rookie territory, as the only first-year players who’ve won the Home Run Derby outright are the Yankees’ Aaron Judge in 2017 and the Mets’ Pete Alonso in 2019.

They'll each be part of the eight-player tournament field. From 2005 to 2013, a gold ball has been used once a player reaches nine outs (in 2014 when the T-Mobile Ball came into play, six; since 2015, during the final minute). If a batter hit a home run using the golden ball, Century 21 Real Estate and Major League Baseball would donate $21,000 (a reference to the "21" in "Century 21") per home run to charity . In both 2005 and 2006, $294,000 was raised for the charities, equaling fourteen golden ball home runs per year. State Farm continued this in 2007 as they designated $17,000 per home run (one dollar for each of State Farm's agencies), to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In the 2007 event, fifteen golden balls were hit for a donation of $255,000, and ten ($170,000) were hit in the 2008 event.

He'll now have the chance to follow in the footsteps of Bobby Abreu and Ryan Howard to become the latest Phillie to take home the title. Players were seeded 1-8 by the number of home runs hit heading into the weekend — you can see how they stack up below. We would have a chance for Altuve/Ichiro, or Vogelbach/Lorenzen, though. It wouldn’t be guaranteed, but we deserve the chance, at least.
He also didn't play in the majors in 2017 after getting released by the A's, and he didn't even tear the cover off the ball in Triple-A, where he hit 12 home runs last season. But the corner infielder/utility man has had quite the season for the Dodgers, belting 22 homers in his 225 at-bats. That's good for an NL-best at-bat-per-home run rate of 10.2. • Alonso has hit 131 career homers in the Derby, the most of any player in a career -- ahead of Joc Pederson’s 99. Granted, the more recent, timed format has made this possible. Alonso also holds the records for most homers in a first round, with 35 in 2021, and a final round, with 23 in each of the Derbies he’s done.
For 2009, State Farm added $5,000 for all non-Gold Ball homers, and $517,000 was collected. For 2010, the non-Gold Ball homer was reduced to $3,000 per home run and a total of $453,000 was collected. Since 2014 any homer hit off a T-Mobile Ball resulted in a $10,000 donation to charity by T-Mobile and MLB, to Team Rubicon. Each round is four minutes, starting when the first pitch is thrown. Any home run hit on a pitch thrown before the clock reaches zero will count.

He’ll become the 14th rookie to participate in the contest. At 21 years, 201 days old on Monday, Rodríguez will be the fourth-youngest Derby participant and could become the youngest winner. • Having missed considerable time early in 2022, Acuña has just eight home runs, tied with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in 2019 for the fourth-fewest first-half homers for any Derby participant. Before this season, only Ivan Rodriguez and Brady Anderson had come into the competition having hit fewer -- Rodriguez will also be joined this season by Pujols, who has six homers in '22. His 495-foot home run on Sept. 25, 2020, is tied for the sixth-longest homer of the Statcast era, and is the longest home run hit by any of this year's Derby participants under Statcast tracking . Acuña's average home run distance this season, 437 feet, also leads the Majors by a full 10 feet -- over two Rockies, Ryan McMahon and C.J.
Schwarber hit 55 home runs total in the three rounds, second most ever behind Giancarlo Stanton's 61 in 2016. And he happens to be a feller who a) seems to enjoy the spotlight and b) seems to enjoy being good at baseball. He also got shut out the only time he was invited to participate, so you know he has a chip on his shoulder. Oh, I believe he can still be tremendously entertaining, and anyone who doesn’t support this idea needs to go on a watchlist. We’ve heard for years that Ichiro could be a batting-practice legend if he wanted to focus on home runs. He doesn’t have to worry about the myth that the Derby negatively affects a hitter’s swing.

Beginning in 1991, the format changed to a 3-round contest. From 1991 to 2006, 8-10 players were selected and hit as many home runs as possible before reaching 10 outs in each round. The tally reset for each round, with the top four advancing to the second round, and the top two advancing to the final. In 2000, the field reverted to the current four-player-per-league format. The only exception was 2005, when Major League Baseball changed the selection criteria so that eight players represented their home countries instead of their respective leagues. The change was believed to be in promotion of the inaugural World Baseball Classic, played in March 2006.
